Cannoli's, Wood, Veggies and a Buns Video

Some Cannoli's, Wood, Veggies
and a Video
(for your entertaining enjoyment)

These were the cannoli's made by Smarty Girl.
I really enjoyed one.  ONE, that's all I had.
I'm trying to be disciplined.

This is the wood we bought  today for our compost bin.
I really hope we get our initial investment back in Black Gold.
Otherwise I may hear about it for years to come.

Buns is a great example and role model for consuming veggies with glee.
That's glee, as in a happy emotion.
Not, GLEE, as in the musical sitcom.
Not that there's anything wrong with watching TV during dinner.
If that's what you're into.

And if you'd like to put your kids in front of this video during dinnertime,
go right ahead.  You do not need my expressed permission to show this Speilberg-esque
masterpiece.

I wish I could consume greens as voraciously as the Buns.  It also shows why I may need
some low fencing around my upcoming garden.
But all these greens comes out as little brown poops which I will put in
that compost bin, which will break down, then will go on the veggies,
and then Buns will get to consume some,
which will eventually be pooped out, which will be added to the
compost bin, which will be....

Bon Appetit

The Life of Buns

The Life of Buns

Buns eating his favorite new food, kale.
Oh, and while he was totally engrossed in munching,
we applied his 'walking' vest.
He doesn't really mind it, he just tries to chew it off
when he's not distracted.

Then it's time for him to chill out on the sofa.
He's like the king, or prince of the house.
Gets petted, fed, groomed and pampered all day, all night long.

May we all live the good life.

Today on Whippoorwill Road

Today on Whippoorwill Road

I got some great advice from Wise One (my dad) about my upcoming garden.

Inspecting the ground.

The Wise One says it's a great place to plant a garden and
I'll have to add lime to the soil.

We got to say 'goodbye' to second eldest, Clayton
before his journey back to North Carolina.
(Thanks for visiting us this weekend.)

We got to hear stories of the bold deer devastating my mom's beautiful roses
while the men were in the Sears Auto Store.

Well, time to go.  Have to get errands done today.

When we arrived home, a neighbor dog was waiting patiently.
Our Shy Dog got to play with a friend.

Buns got a spic and span cage to lounge in.
Courtesy of Smarty Girl.

And Smarty Girl finally gets to make Cannoli's for the first time.

But not before she got to make her own Cannoli tubes out of wood
with her Dad in the workshop.
She sanded the ends.

After all her (and He-Man's) hard work, I'm pretty sure I'll get to try one of these fabulous,
handmade desserts.

Just thankful for all we've received, all we've gotten today
on Whippoorwill Road.

Buns Got Snipped

Buns got snipped.

We took the Buns earlier this month to get neutered.
Though there are no female rabbits around,
he will be much happier and less frustrated if he's
in an altered state.

It was a freezing morning but a beautiful one.
Smarty Girl was home from college to attend him, reassure him,
comfort him.

He really doesn't mind traveling in his Pet Taxi.
We dropped him off at 8 am then....

She brought me to 'Five Star Day Cafe' for a lovely breakfast.

Buns did great.  He came home around 4 pm and since that day, he's been romping around
and pooping everywhere.
Speaking of... he's in a little time out right now.
Chewing on books that are minding their own business resting on the side tables
is unacceptable.
The poops, however- no problem.  They will be added to the compost bin to make some
great soil for the upcoming garden.

Here's to you and yours from Whippoorwill Road,

Man-Child

The Man-Child Becomes a Man

This month we celebrated Colson's 18th birthday.
How did we celebrate?
We took him to a park he's never been to with his sister and his cousin.
Then to dinner and a movie.
The birthday boy,  man is looking angelic (or demonic, if you look long enough).
Why is his cousin making that face?
Is he saying, "Look, I just got my teeth cleaned."
or
"I just ate a bitter berry out here."?

Then I made the New Man pose next to some blooming daffodils.
He worked the camera.

Then we went on a little hike with the men leading the way.

I'm shameless at making my kids pose.
They're really good sports complying to my wishes...
...except at cleaning their rooms.
That's another story.

 Ummmmmm......
well I guess after making him sit next to running water....
No further comment.

Later, he received a little present that probably every young man would love.
And every old man would love.
Every middle aged man would love and come to think of it,
women of all ages would love...
A GAS CARD
(for the car, of course. The other type is free and there's plenty of it around here).

Then, he got to blow out candles on his untraditional birthday "cake":
A Birthday Pumpkin Pie.
The Buns has to involve himself in the celebrations, hoping to get some of that pie.

Happy Birthday Colson.
You're technically a man now.  But you'll always be our baby.  :-)

Love and kisses on Whippoorwill Road.

Chicken Research

Still Researching...

Everyday I search, I read, I browse.
What is realistic?  What is doable?

Yesterday evening while waiting for a friend to come over so we could head out to dinner, I was standing in my pasture with my cell phone using the compass app to get the definite location of 'north' and 'south'.  I had read that for a southern garden it was good to lay your garden out this way.  This could be true for all gardens, I don't know.  Also, never run your garden downhill. That makes sense.

But where to put the chicken house in this scheme of things?

Plus, what kind of garden shall it be, what style, what purpose shall it have?  That was one day's worth of research and contemplation.
Definitely leaning towards a potager garden now.

A potager garden is a decorative vegetable garden. Traditionally, it’s an informal, garden filled with vegetables, edible and non-edible flowers,   and herbs.  A delight for the eyes and the stomach.

This is a wonderful layout, but too big for me- a beginner.  But it gives me a good idea of design.

Should the beds be square or rectangle?

Should I start with two or four?

Or maybe five?

Round is great because I don't like sharp angles.
And it just seems less formal, more friendly, more inviting.
Now that I know north, east, south and west of my property, I'm a little closer to breaking ground.
I guess the next thing to do will be to stake out the dimensions...

..."Richard, ohhh RRRRichhhhharddd"...
Where is that He-Man?

Still planning...lots to do.
Closer to taking the plunge at Whippoorwill Road.

2012's Desires, Wishes, Aspirations

2012's Desires, Wishes, Aspirations, Hopes, Dreams
and Goals

Yep, I want chickens.  Not a lot.  Just 3-5 egg laying hens.
Is that too much to aspire to?
I think not.

(Ok, maybe this is too much to ask for.)

But certainly not this.

You might be thinking to yourself,
"Why?  Why go through all that trouble, expense, poop?"

Well, let's just say it will be one small step toward self sustenance.
Sure, it might be a romantic notion...
but,
at the end of my life, do I really want to lie in a bed knowing I didn't do what I wanted?
(Of course, by that time, I might be as crazy as a loon and not even remember I had desires.
But have no fear, my daughter knows exactly what to do with me then...)

Aren't these cute?  Don't they scream 'Manageable'?

Now, here's the other side of 2012's desires, wishes,
aspirations, hopes...
... well, you get the drift.

That's me down there in 2015.
I'm thin, looking 20 years old again because I've been slaving away for years getting this thing to thrive, with a garden that makes one feel they've been transported to a magical, mystical, mesmerizing place.
Yeah, that's all I want.
Oh yes, and with a beautiful chicken coop in view.

But here's what I have now:
An empty pasture just begging to be productive.
And here's what it's being used for at this moment:
Man-Child and Man of Steel are at it again,
becoming fierce Hunter Gatherers.

A fire pit to roast some meat from the grocery store.
I mean, the game they hunted with great skill
and steadiness of bow.

Hey, wait a minute... is that the remnants of an
old bird cage?

They assure me it's the perfect set up for grilling and protection
against a Zombie Apocalypse.
(You see, the Zombies won't be able to rip out your
innards cause you'll have this metal grid
protecting the place where they
tend to grab you first.)
Oh well, here's hoping I get my garden before the Zombies get me!
And that's my 2012 desires, wishes, aspirations...
for Whippoorwill Road.
Love,
Bernadine
