It Was a Hot and Scary Night

It's been so hot, that when we first saw this squirrel, we thought it had heat exhaustion.
It didn't, it was just cooling itself off in the shade.

Finally, it rained.  It thundered.  And Big 'Ol Nasty Dog panicked yet again.
We tried to close him off from the main kitchen area since he pants and slobbers and we were eating dinner.

Clay went to the rescue.  He left his meal to comfort Big 'Ol Nasty Dog.

He sat there in the dogs bed and held this trembling fraidy cat until the worst of the storm was over.

And me, being the compassionate one, wrote myself a note.

Welcome

My daughter found this at the Goodwill store.
She thought it would be the perfect accessory to Buns' condo.
She was right.  It's adorable.

Buns is curious of the new decor.

But it's the way I feel about guests to this blog.
Have a relaxing Sunday.

Two Unrelated Topics

Ever hear of the book, "The $64 Tomato"?
Well, we were headed down that path when we started erecting a fence several weeks ago.
We put in metal posts and hung a gate.

Then, *Bing*, a light bulb went off!
(It was more like an alarm.)
We were about to spend a small fortune to protect two beds.

We removed the gate, dug up the post, returned the wire and instead, bought this:  The stinkiest stuff that really works to keep varmints away.  It has saved us hundreds, and hundreds, and hundreds, and hundreds of dollars.
I don't spray close to the veggies but rather a perimeter in the grass, outside the mulched area.  I have a fear I'm going to step in this when it's wet and track it inside my house.
I think it's urine of dead animals.  Only kidding!
So far, so good.  No more marauders in the middle of the night.

Now, quickly and radically changing the subject:
Here we have Big Ole' Nasty Dog.
Now an inside dog (who goes regularly to the professional groomers) that lounges his days away on an egg crate mattress.
Which, by the way, makes the best dog bed.  Only $9.99!  Fold in half, cover in an old sheet and when the sheet gets dirty, just toss it in the laundry.

And see his dog bone by his nose?  He'll leave it there for hours, maybe the whole day.  Strange, strange dog.

He'll rouse himself up when we're watching TV...

...he'll mosey on over to Buns...

...who will pester Smarty Girl for some affection and...

...then both will pester He Man for snuggles...

... then they'll compare petting notes...

... and bask in the realization they are loved.

Now that's what I call two unrelated topics.

The Buns Condo

We've been talking a while about building a condo in the dog crate that is Buns' home.  This week we did it.
This is his three story condo.  (In the corner of our living room.)

He loves the very top level.
I brought that 'Comfort' empty box from the hospital.  I thought it would make a great hiding place for him.

He plays with his toys, he does lay on his rug...

... sometimes he stands in his litter box...

...  and just munches away.

If you go anywhere near his condo, he begs to come out.

And we usually let him.

Have a great day.

What to Do With the Weeds

Yesterday late afternoon, I pruned the rose bush.
The rains we fortunately have been having weighed them down to the breaking point.
They were lying all over the patio and looked a mess.

It was such a lovely evening, Smarty Girl and I stayed outside till the sun went down.
We sat and smelled the roses.  Literally.

As we sat and smelled, she wondered, "Can Buns eat rose petals and leaves?"
She brought out her computer and in the fading sunlight, began researching.

Yes, rabbits can eat roses.
She found that a lot of our huge weeds are also edible for rabbits.
So, she went harvesting.
She brought in white clover, thistle, dandelion.... just to name a few,
and laid the smorgasbord at Buns feet.

Buns gobbled those weeds like he had been starved for weeks.

This new type of weed control is motivational.  I was inspired!

So after we brought Smarty Girl back to campus, you know what I did this morning?
I went harvesting.
Bon Appetit, Buns.

Hoping his appetite
remains voracious

Buns and the Girl

We picked up Smarty Girl from college.
It's her birthday weekend.

She loves her animals.
She thinks Big Ole' Nasty Dog is beautiful.
Come to think of it, I do too.   He proves he's still a gentleman dog by treating Buns with respect and kindness.

When she's home, she drags me around town.  (She thinks I have the stamina of a teenager and I try not to disappoint.  *yawn*)
It brings her great happiness to buy treats for Buns.
We bought this little edible hideaway house for him.

We underestimated his size.  He tried to squeeze in but was unsuccessful.
We'll give it to my niece's guinea pig.

She loves this little rabbit.
After shopping, I feel exactly this way: Wiped out and in a trance.

For the record: I didn't put lipstick on Buns.  That's just the color of his lip area and ...
...Buns' feet are that color due to walking on newspaper.
Not because my floors are that dirty.  Though I should mop and vacuum more often...  Second thoughts... nahhh....!

I hope you have a very relaxing weekend.
Put your feet up, lie back and chill.

Easter Hoopla

Let me give a brief update of what's going on here on Whippoorwill Road:
This un-neutered red cur got into the pond and stole...

...this Italian duck decoy.  Imagine, after immigrating from Italy, relocating to Maine, being adopted into Georgia, you're sitting in your pond, minding your own business and then that skinny red creature scoops you up and carts you to an unknown burial place.
There are no words.
So, now there is one lonely duck decoy.  Relegated to the fountain, again.
Grrrr... (*that's me making that noise, not the skinny red cur*).

Smarty-Girls seedlings showed their gratitude in the nicest of ways.

Oh yes, and there's more...  Today is planting day for tomatoes, basil, peppers, squash, zucchini, string beans and all these flowers.

Dutiful mother bird remains on the nest.

She's a good egg!

Smarty Girl wanted to make Easter gift baskets last night.
Big Ole Nasty Dog wanted in on the action but alas...

...he had a bad case of halitosis.  Smarty Girl couldn't take it anymore.

Not to be ignored, Buns also wanted in on the sweet action and pestered Smarty Girl to no end.

He had to smell every thing, try to nibble everything.

Had to inspect every little thing.

Then every once in a while, he just needed a little kiss.

Finally, though this is not the greatest of photos, Big Ole Nasty Dog and Buns like each other.  It kind of symbolizes the Lion lying down with the Lamb.  Well, kind of...
... there's no way Big Ole Nasty Dog could be compared to a lion.  He's more like a scaredy cat.
The sentiments are the same though...

Wishing you peace this Easter Weekend from
