Two Unrelated Topics

Ever hear of the book, "The $64 Tomato"?
Well, we were headed down that path when we started erecting a fence several weeks ago.
We put in metal posts and hung a gate.

Then, *Bing*, a light bulb went off!
(It was more like an alarm.)
We were about to spend a small fortune to protect two beds.

We removed the gate, dug up the post, returned the wire and instead, bought this:  The stinkiest stuff that really works to keep varmints away.  It has saved us hundreds, and hundreds, and hundreds, and hundreds of dollars.
I don't spray close to the veggies but rather a perimeter in the grass, outside the mulched area.  I have a fear I'm going to step in this when it's wet and track it inside my house.
I think it's urine of dead animals.  Only kidding!
So far, so good.  No more marauders in the middle of the night.

Now, quickly and radically changing the subject:
Here we have Big Ole' Nasty Dog.
Now an inside dog (who goes regularly to the professional groomers) that lounges his days away on an egg crate mattress.
Which, by the way, makes the best dog bed.  Only $9.99!  Fold in half, cover in an old sheet and when the sheet gets dirty, just toss it in the laundry.

And see his dog bone by his nose?  He'll leave it there for hours, maybe the whole day.  Strange, strange dog.

He'll rouse himself up when we're watching TV...

...he'll mosey on over to Buns...

...who will pester Smarty Girl for some affection and...

...then both will pester He Man for snuggles...

... then they'll compare petting notes...

... and bask in the realization they are loved.

Now that's what I call two unrelated topics.
Love from Whippoorwill Road,
Bernadine

  2. That is cool on the invisible fence stuff, how often do you have to apply it?

    1. I reapply after a heavy rain. I've only applied it twice and it's worked so far.

  3. Thankfully, our garden area has never been invaded by anything, other than us. While we do have rabbits around, they seem to pref the abundant clover that is all over the yard and passes for lawn now. Enjoyed the cute pet shots.

  4. Thanks for visiting my blog and commenting. I hope my garden isn't invaded any more. I, too, have lots of clover. Maybe the little varmints were just in the mood for something else that morning. :-)

  5. My garden is in pots..such as it is. Just squash and tomatoes..but just wait until next year. Buns..Oh...so adorable. How did you do that..train a rabbit..does he have a box to potty in..this is so interesting!

    1. Buns is a great pet. Rabbits actually potty train themselves. He does have a litter box that he uses. The big issue with him is that when he's out running around, we have to be aware of what he's doing since rabbits love to chew on things. We're so glad that our dog is very mellow and does not bother the rabbit at all.

    2. I went back and caught up a bit. Sometimes I need to do that...and there was Buns in her thriple decker hotel. :) He is just gorgeous.
We had a black and white bunny a long, long time ago. My baby girl, who was just crawling was the only person he really liked a lot. And the dog chased him once to the point of exhaustion. I was so upset..the children thought it was funny and it was NOT. They were all very young. We had to give him up when we left..but I will always remember him riding on the baby's back when she crawled around the house.
      He was adorable...and so sweet.

    1. Our dog is just too much of a hound (stinky) to get that close. Plus, he has an issue with gas. Hahahahaa.

  7. You have a house rabbit! I love rabbits. So cute with your dog. Hope the critter deterrent works! It's true fences are expensive, but they do serve a good purpose when needed.

    1. My daughter got the rabbit in October. We are "keeping" him for her until she's out of college and on her own. He's a great pet and we love him. In the future, we are planning on fencing in the whole little pasture area since we are going to create more beds, get chickens and a coop.
      Have a great week.

  8. Hello! First, I'm a new follower of your blog, I found you after visitng someone who visit my blog, isn't that how all great things are found? LOL! Anyway, I'm just catching up on your writings and I had to comment on this liquid fence. I JUST saw a commercial today for this (how weird is that?) and I was wondering if it really worked. I haven't gotten our gardens at our farm built yet, but once thing that has been slowing me down is the thought of the price of the fencing. I know we'll need one eventually but I would like to have put in a garden already, a small one for now, and I didn't because I knew I couldn't have the fence up just yet.

Thanks for the first hand account. I might just have to rethink my plans!!

    1. I'm so glad you found my blog and decided to follow. Thank you. The 'Liquid Fence' does work. I reapply after it rains. The bottle says you can spray it close or on the plants, but it's so stinky, I can't do it so I spray around the perimeter... in the grass... not even on the mulched paths.
This is my first year growing vegetables and I've been amazed at the results. It's incredible how a small patch of land can produce so much. Good Luck.

  9. This has to be one of the cutest post, bernadine, I think you have two spoiled babies, vying for you and your dh's attention. ~smiling~

Enjoyed catching up on some of your previous posts too. Your garden looks so healthy.
    Thanks for sharing.
    Enjoy your day.
    Hugs,

    1. Thanks so much, Sue. Yes, those two are spoiled. We even have to feed the dog by spoonful because he's strange that way (and I'm convinced his sniffer has gone bad and he doesn't smell his food well).
      Have a great week.

  10. I like what you all did for Buns. It got me thinking Chestnut &'Velveteen would have more useable space in their hutch by building up like Bons condo. A cute pair you have there. Blessings!

    1. First of all, I love the names of your rabbits. Buns loves to sit on the very top board, gazing out at his domain. Then, when he's wanting more privacy, he sits on the very bottom. He uses every square inch. I think you're rabbits would love a condo.
